The basic or degree level qualification for a Ayurveda medical profession is Ayurvedacharya(Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery-BAMS) which is of 5 1/2 years duration (including 1 year internship). An add on degree of MD(Ay.) or MS(Ay.), is an added benefit.
The qualification required for entrance for5.5 year bachelor degree course is 12th standard or any other equivalent examination recognized by the concerned state governments and education Boards provided the candidate passes the examination with 50% Agregate marks in the subjects of physics, chemistry and Biology. For foreign students any other equivalent qualification to be approved by the university will be allowed.
At the post graduate level, there is specialization in 22 specialties leading to the award of MD Ayurveda or MS Ayurveda Degree of 3 years duration after graduation is available.
PhD degree in the concerned subject of specialization is also available after post graduation in 3-7 years.
Provision for the Postgraduate Diploma courses of 2years Duration in the specialities like Panchakarma, Kshar Karma, Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics, Twak Roga. Ayurvedic Dietetics, Swasthavritta and Yoga, Prasuti Evum Striroga, Balroga, Ayurvedic Pharmacognosy & Standardization (Dravyaguna Vigyan), Manasik Swasthya, Netraroga Vigyan, Rasayan and Vajikaran, Ayurvedic Sangyahara,Chhaya Avum Vikiran Vigyan, Marma Avum Asthi Chikitsa (Orthopeadics)Rog Nidan Vidhi (Diagnostic techniques)has been made from 2010.
Regulation of these courses at central level is done under the CCIM Act by the duly constituted body under the provisions of the Act
Master,Bachelor and Diploma courses in Ayurveda pharmacy(M.Pharm,Bpharm&Dpharm) courses for 3years,4years and 2 years duration respectively is also available in reputed institutions like Indian Institute of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Sciences,under GujaratAyurvedaUniversity Jamnagar,Kerala University of Health sciences,Banarsa Hindu University , Dr.sarvapalli Radhakrishnan Ayurveda university Rajsthan.New campus of BHU at barkhacha has also started. certificate courses of 1 year duration in Prasav Vigyan, Vikiran avam Chhaya. Kerala University of Health Sciences is conducting Bsc Nursing course in Ayurveda of 4 year duration and 1 year compulsory internship . Dr.sarvapalli Radhakrishnan Ayurveda University Rajsthan is conducting Diploma in AYUSH Nursing and Pharmacy(DAN & P)of 3 years Duration, Certificate Course in Panch Karma for 4years Duration,Certificate Course in Ksharsutra for 3 months Duration B. Pharma(Ayurveda) of 4 years Duration Panch Karma Technician Course&Diploma in Herbal Farming of 01 year DurationCertificate Course in Magnet Therapy of 3 months Duration for AYUSH graduates, Diploma Course in Ayurveda for Medical Students of 80 hours Duration, Diploma Course in Ayurveda for foreigners & Ayurveda Course for Allopathic Doctors ( CAM Practioners P.G. Diploma)of 1 year duration. MAHARASHTRA UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH SCIENCES, NASHIK is also conducting fellowship courses in Ayurved Drug Manufacturing, Ksharsutra Chikitsa,and Ayurvedic Raw Material Identification, Storage, Processing and Packaging for 1 year duration.Certificate Course in Ayurvedic Cosmetics, Cultivation and Marketing of Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants, Assistant Nursing in Ayurveda and Dietetics of 06 months Duration is also conducted by MUHS apart from Other courses falling within the regulatory norms of ccim.
There were little options available for freshly graduated doctors in Ayurveda few years back ie just to start own practice and join in the limited state government and local body (District board, Municipal boards/corporations and Mines} Ayurveda Dispensaries. However, today there are many promising opportunities available to Ayurveda graduates not only in india but also in other counties of the world. The areas which are available to build a career can be broadly classified as follows.
While selecting a career, a student should consider to evaluate and match his or her own interest, basic qualities as well as specific qualities, which a specific field may demand (e.g., a student planning to pursue a career in management must have good communication skill), and the resources available to him/her with the requirement of the career option. Graduate doctors (BAMS) may opt to work for Central Government Health Scheme(CGHS), Employees state Insurance corporation (ESI),State government run Hospital/ Dispensaries. private Nursing Homes, Hospitals and Spa centers , of Ayurveda apart from the private practice.In some of the states like utter pradesh Primary Health Centres has the provision of 3rd Medical officer from Ayurveda. Part time job while in private practice is also available with the third party accreditation authority like NABH, Insurance companies as Ayurveda expert, Advisors/consultants in private and autonomous organizations.
There is an upsurge in idiopathic, non communicable and life style based disease and ailments everyday. Self employment is the most suitable option due to increasing trend of resistance from many antibiotics, little availability of safe and side effect free medicines in conventional modern chemical system. The option of self employment also provides opportunity from the freedom of working hours and a good pay package..Ayurveda. Doctors can also work for business organizations, industries, schools and embassies as consultants. Salary of the individuals can depend upon the experience and the capability of an individual. The earnings of a doctor through private practice depends on his/her popularity. The doctors who are working in government hospitals are also well paid and equal opportunity in respect of promotional avenues and scale of pay with the doctors of conventional system. Many Teaching institutions in Ayurveda has implemented the norms laid down by University Grants Commission for promotion and scale of pay. Research institutions in government sector has no ambiguity with the conventional system in respect of pay and promotion.As the big pharmaceutical MNCs are taking interest in Ayurveda well paid scope in the field of clinical trials and research has emerged.
