How to beat the Heat
Summers have arrived and with the temperatures soaring day by day, people are more at risk of getting a heat stroke. Heatstroke is the failure of the body to maintain a normal temperature after excessive exposure to intense heat. The major cause of heatstroke is exposure to intense heat and strenuous physical activities.

Symptoms:
  • Headache : You may experience a throbbing headache.
  • Muscle cramps : Your muscles may feel tender or cramped in the early stages of heatstroke, but may later go rigid.
  • Hot dry skin: Your skin may turn red as your body temperature rises.
  • Rapid breathing: You may find difficulty in breathing.
  • Disorientation: You may feel uncomfortable in talking or understanding what others are saying.

Prevention: Follow these simple steps to prevent heatstroke :
  • Avoid direct exposure to sun. If you have to go outdoors carry a light coloured umbrella, hat or a scarf to cover yourself. Prefer to keep your activities for cooler parts of the day, early morning or evening.
  • If you are feeling very hot,  cool your face with wet wipes or a damp cloth.
  • Take a cool shower to bring your temperature down.
  • Wear loose fitting and light colored clothing. Avoid dark coloured clothes as they absorb heat. Light-colored clothing is better as they reflect sun rays . Prefer cotton against synthetic clothing.
  • Keep yourself hydrated to maintain the body temperature. Keep drinking water after certain intervals even is you're not thirsty. Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks  as they dehydrate your body.
  • Drink enough fluids, water, lemon juice(nimbu-paani), lassi and chaach, wood apple squash, jal-jeera, aam panna, butter milk, coconut water etc.
  • Avoid sudden temperature fluctuations, do not move from air conditioner to direct heat.
  • If your work is more field oriented, take breaks in the shade or a cool area.
  • Sunglasses are an essential part of your outfit in summers. They are not only stylish but also protect your eyes from bright light. Make sure to stick to UV (Ultraviolet) protected sunglasses.
  • Eat fruits and vegetable which have high water content like watermelon, musk melon, mangoes,  Beetroot (chukkandar), cucumber, pineapple, orange, grapes, spinach, lettuce, broccoli etc.

Wish you Happy and Healthy Summers!
