POSHAN Abhiyaan (National Nutrition Mission) is India's flagship programme, launched in March 2018 to improve the nutritional status of children up to 6 years, adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers to achieve specific targets for reduction in low birth weight babies, stunting growth, undernutrition and prevalence of anemia over next three years.
POSHAN Abhiyaan is not a programme but a Jan Andolan, and Bhagidaari, meaning "People's Movement". This programme incorporates inclusive participation of public representatives of local bodies, government departments of the state, social organizations and the public and private sector at large.
In the address of Mann Ki Baat on 30 August 2020, PM highlighted the importance of Poshan Maah in converting nutrition awareness into a mass movement. He recalled the maxim - "Yatha Annam Tatha Mannam," The month of September is being observed as Rashtriya Poshan Maah. During the Nutrition Month, a food and nutrition quiz, as well as meme competition will be organized on the My Gov portal.
By ensuring an adequate, healthy diet in infants and young children, we can help them to develop into healthy, productive adults. Good nutrition helps children to grow properly and the strength to play and learn. A key component of optimal nutrition during childhood and beyond is adequate intake of important micro- and macronutrients.
