SEERUMKOLLI VARMAM

SYNONYMS:  

Sidai varmam

SITE:           

 Back of the head

Anatomically this site is located as the point of intersection of sagittal and lambdoid sutures. It is at the point of meeting of parietal and occipital bones.

It is also stated that it is 12 finger breadths down from kondaikolli varmam backwards.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF INJURY:

Rotation of head, foam in the mouth, tongue and jaw deviation are the major symptoms. Other symptoms that may manifest are continual sneezing, giddiness, cough, thirst, sweating, bleeding from the nose and sometimes mental instability.

MANAGEMENT

The usual line of treatment in varmam therapy is to first treat the patient with the varmam physical therapy followed by drug therapy.

Varmam physical therapy:

Different methods are given in various texts.

Elakku murai (Relieving method)-1

Holding and raising the lower jaw and then massaging from the throat upwards along both sides of the head will relieve the symptoms.

Elakku murai (Relieving method)-2

Applying pressure with the help of hand in the pit in the back of the head just above the neck will help relieving the injury on this varmam point.

Varmam drug therapy:

External medicated oil application on head and medicated paste application are advised.

Oral Medicines:

Decoction made from roots of orilaithamariai (Hybanthus enneaspermus), vishnukiranthi (Evolvulus alsinoides L.), seethevichengaluneer, pulichuvadi (Ipomoea pes-tigridis), cittamutti (Pavonia zeylanica), vallarai (Centella asiatica) is used for making porridge and this medicated porridge is advised to be taken.

Note : Self application of techniques in varma therapy may produce severe adverse effects. Supervision of a Siddha physician is mandatoy.
