World Arthritis Day
World Arthritis Day is a day dedicated towards creating awareness regarding musculoskeletal diseases and is celebrated every year on 12th October. This year the theme is, "It’s in your hands, take action ". The theme is for the people who are suffering from rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases(RMDs) to give them a way to live better, to take action, and be mobile if they want to live their life to the fullest.
Arthritis refers to inflammation of joints and is usually characterized by pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints. Although, it manifests in the form of more than 100 different joint diseases, yet it commonly occurs as Osteoarthritis (caused due to damage to cartilage adjoining bones) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (caused due to attack of immune system upon healthy joint tissues). The risk of arthritis increases with increasing age. Women are more prone to acquiring this disease in comparison to men. India has a high prevalence of arthritis, with about 15% people i.e. over 180 million people affected by it.
