World Pharmacists Day is observed on 25th September every year all over the world. The purpose of this Day is to encourage activities that promote and advocate for the role of the pharmacist in improving health in every corner of the world.
This day was established by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), the global federation of national associations of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, which is in official relations with the World Health Organization.
In 2009 Council meeting of the FIP Congress is in Istanbul, Turkey, the Turkish Pharmacists Association suggested to annually celebrate a World Pharmacists Day, to be organised on September 25 (the day that FIP was founded in 1912).
This proposal was unanimously accepted by the Council. From next year 2010, World Pharmacists Day has been coordinated by FIP and celebrated through the involvement of its Member Organisations, either with structured, widespread campaigns or small scale projects. Each year welcomes a new theme to developed to showcase the pharmacist in their positive affect on health.
The theme of this year’s World Pharmacists Daywill be“Pharmacists: Caring for you”.
According to FIP President Dr Carmen Peña“This year’s theme not only reflect the important role of pharmacists in providing care to the public but also to highlight the emotional connection they have with their patients. The role of pharmacists has evolved from that of a provider of medicines to that of a care provider. Pharmacists play an important role in the outcome of pharmacological therapies and at the end their effort improves patients’ quality of life.”
This year’s World Pharmacist Day can be used to highlight the confidence and close bonding that pharmacists have with their patients and other healthcare professionals. It also emphasises to policymakers the concept of pharmacists being providers of solutions to governments through their services.
